Network availability, redundancy, resilience, diversity - what's the difference?

Network availability, redundancy, resilience and diversity are all common terms used interchangeably by network providers and carriers. This often leads to confusion as to how the service has actually been designed.

At we have standardised our use of these terms to support clarity of design. For the purpose of this journal article we are discussing the availability, redundancy, resilience and diversity of network Circuits. A Circuit is defined as one of the following products:

  • Internet Access: Direct Internet Access, IP Transit
  • Point to Point: Ethernet Line, Wavelength, Dark Fibre

Redundancy is the umbrella classification for the process of minimising service unavailability.

We measure network redundancy in two ways:

  • Resilience
  • Diversity

Whilst these two measures of network redundancy can be designed in conjunction with one another, it’s important to first understand the differences.

Resiliency is a measure of network redundancy for a single Circuit.

Whereas Diversity is a measure of network redundancy across multiple Circuits.

Having resilient Circuits that are diverse from one another provides the maximum level of redundancy. However, the higher the level of resilience per Circuit the more complex the diversity planning becomes.

Availability is the calculation of uptime performance stated as a percentage. Service Availability is guaranteed by the globally standardised SLA and can be provided against either individual Circuits or across multiple Circuits (a Solution). The greater the level of redundancy the higher the Service Availability percentage is.

are a specialist network provider. Our tailored approach to network services allows us to design individual Circuits or multiple Circuits (a Solution) with the highest level of redundancy, guaranteed by a globally standardised SLA.
